Unofficial Visits: Irish President
Lord Laird asked Her Majesty's Government:
How many unofficial visits the President of the Irish Republic has made over the past five years to (a) Northern Ireland, and (b) Great Britain; and whether there has been any cost to the United Kingdom for those visits. [HL4273]
The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Lord Malloch-Brown): In the past five years the President of the Irish Republic has made 44 working visits to Northern Ireland and 18 to Great Britain at the invitation of public and private sector organisations and individuals.
In accordance with normal practice for a visiting head of state, the President is provided with the security protection deemed appropriate in each case. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office does not hold records of associated costs.
