The House met at half-past two o’clock.
PRAYERS were read by the Lord Bishop of Leicester.
1. Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone—The Right Honourable Virginia Hilda Brunette Maxwell Bottomley, having been created Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone, of St Helens in the County of Isle of Wight, for life by Letters Patent dated in the forenoon of 24th June 2005, was introduced between the Baroness Noakes and the Lord Fowler, the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod and Garter King of Arms preceding; and took and subscribed the oath pursuant to statute.
2. Lord Mawhinney—The Right Honourable Sir Brian Stanley Mawhinney, Knight, having been created Baron Mawhinney, of Peterborough in the County of Cambridgeshire, for life by Letters Patent dated in the afternoon of 24th June 2005, was introduced between the Lord Harris of Peckham and the Lord King of Bridgwater, the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod and Garter King of Arms preceding; and took and subscribed the oath pursuant to statute.
3. Oath—Robin Brunskill Lord Cooke of Thorndon took and subscribed the oath pursuant to statute.

Select Committee Report
7. Procedure of the House—The First Report from the Select Committee was made and ordered to be printed. (HL Paper 26)
Public Business
8. Business of the House—It was moved by the Lord Rooker, on behalf of the Lord President (Baroness Amos), that the following motion be referred to a Grand Committee:
Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 (Designated Area) Order 2005—The Lord Dholakia to move, That the Order be considered;
the motion was agreed to.
9. Business of the House—It was moved by the Lord Rooker, on behalf of the Lord President (Baroness Amos), that Standing Order 41 (Arrangement of the Order Paper) be dispensed with on Thursday 7th July next to allow the motion standing in the name of the Lord Warner to be taken after the debate in the name of the Baroness Finlay of Llandaff; the motion was agreed to.
10. Business of the House—It was moved by the Lord Rooker, on behalf of the Lord President (Baroness Amos), that Standing Order 41 (Arrangement of the Order Paper) be dispensed with on Tuesday 12th July next to allow the motion standing in the name of the Lord President to be taken before the Committee stage of the Charities Bill [HL]; the motion was agreed to.
11. Economic Affairs—It was moved by the Chairman of Committees that the Lord Roper be appointed a member of the Select Committee in the place of the Lord Goodhart; the motion was agreed to.
12. Equality Bill [HL]—The House resolved itself into a Committee upon the bill; amendments were moved and (by leave of the Committee) withdrawn; the House was resumed.
13. Iraq: minorities—The Lord Hylton asked Her Majesty’s Government what steps they will take to protect the legitimate interests of the Chaldo-Assyrians and other religious and ethnic minorities in Iraq; after debate, the question was answered by the Baroness Royall of Blaisdon.
14. Equality Bill [HL]—The House again resolved itself into a Committee upon the bill; amendments were moved and (by leave of the Committee) withdrawn; amendments were agreed to; the House was resumed after clause 7 stood part.
The House was adjourned at twenty-four minutes past nine o’clock
till tomorrow, a quarter before ten o’clock for judicial business,
eleven o’clock for public business.
