Young Offenders
Tim Loughton:
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many children were held in prison in each of the last 10 years, broken down by (a) sex, (b) age of first admission and (c) type of offence. [186736]
Mr. Hanson:
Figures showing the number of under 18-year-old prisoners under immediate custodial sentence held in all prison establishments in England and Wales by gender and offence type between 1997 and 2006 can be found in the following table. Information on the age of prisoners at first admission is not available.
These figures have been drawn from administrative IT systems, which, as with any large scale recording system, are subject to possible errors with data entry and processing.
| Under 18 population in prison establishments( 1 ) under an immediate custodial sentence by sex and offence group, England and Wales each year as at 30 June |

Data Sources and Quality
These figures have been drawn from administrative IT systems. Care is taken when processing and analysing the returns, but the detail collected is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system, and so although shown to the last individual, the figures may not be accurate to that level.
This table taken from table 8.21 in Offender Management Caseload Statistics 2002-06 and table 3.3 Prison statistics in England and Wales 1997 - 2001
