Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Written Evidence

Letter to the Parliamentary Relations and Devolution Department, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, from the Clerk of the Committee, 22 July 2004

ZIMBABWE

As part of its monitoring of progress on previous inquiries, the Committee discussed Zimbabwe at its meeting on 21 July and asked me to write requesting information on a number of points arising from the Government's response to its Report of last year.

Further to the recommendation in paragraph 22, the Committee wishes to receive an update on the Government's support to independent broadcasters operating from outside Zimbabwe.

Further to the recommendation made in paragraph 25, the Committee wishes to know whether the Government intends to revisit the question of Mugabe's honorary knighthood.

The Committee has also received representations about the non-payment by the government of Zimbabwe of pension entitlements due to former members of the Rhodesia/Zimbabwe public service who are resident in the United Kingdom. The Committee would welcome the FCO's observations on this situation, and wishes to know whether the Government accepts that it has a duty of care towards these pensioners.

A response not later than 9 September would be appreciated.

Steve Priestley

Clerk of the Committee
