Letter from the Local Government Association,
submitted by Sir Jeremy Beecham, Chairman
The subject of the committee inquiry is not
one on which the LGA has cogitated and established a position,
nor is it one that has been raised with us by our local authority
members. As far as I am aware, the LGA has not been consulted
on a current consultation document from DEFRA on this subject.
In the current climate of the extensive reform to the planning
system processes, it would be extremely difficult for the association,
which is a small organisation representing all local government
interests, to address this issue at this time.
However, I am aware that some councils may have
done good work in partnership with local astronomy groups to mitigate
light pollution of the night sky.
I understand that my officials have discussed
with you an acceptable way forward. The LGA will make its planning
adviser networks aware of the committee's inquiry and encourage
those that have views to submit them to you directly and copy
them to the LGA. Subsequently, you may then invite those authorities
to give oral evidence.
