Select Committee on Science and Technology Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX 21

Letter to the Clerk of the Committee from Mr Graham Watts, Chief Executive, the Construction Industry Council

Thank you for your letter of 27 January 1998 inviting the Construction Industry Council to submit a memorandum of comment addressing the points raised by an inquiry into Innovation and Technology Transfer in the fields of engineering and physical sciences being conducted by the Science and Technology Committee.

As you may know, the CIC is the representative forum for all the professional bodies in the construction industry, collectively representing over 350,000 individual professionals and over 19,000 firms. It was formed in 1988 and its principal objectives are to promote improved value for clients and to encourage unity in the construction industry to emphasise its significance in the nation. A full list of members is attached.[14]

CIC, in conjunction with the Construction Research and Innovation Strategy Panel (CRISP) - an industry/government panel, seeks to promote the exploitation and application of innovation and research in the construction industry and achieves this principally through its Innovation and Research Committee. CIC has provided input and advice to the CRISP submission to the inquiry and is pleased to support the CRISP Memorandum[15], which I understand has been received by you.

I would be pleased to provide further information and advice as required by the inquiry and trust you will not hesitate to contact me should you wish.
