Memorandum submitted by Larne Borough Council

COUNCIL POLICY TOWARDS INWARD INVESTMENT

Larne Borough Council is a proactive Council, which seeks to attract inward investment in a number of ways.

    —  Through regular liaison with LEDU and the Industrial Development Board via formal meetings, telephone contacts and direct contact with potential investors.

    —  Through the provision of targeted "hard copy" promotional materials, and in particular the Take A Look At Larne I and II publications which seek to highlight the benefits of locating business in the Larne Borough. Several thousand of these publications have been distributed to key influencers and contacts within and beyond Northern Ireland.

    —  Through the production of a dedicated economic development website highlighting the advantages of Larne as a location to visit, invest and live in.

In late 1998 Larne Development Forum, the economic development partnership for the Borough of Larne, conducted a face to face survey among the major employers in the Borough. This clearly indicated that a number needed to expand but felt that there was not adequate industrial land within Larne Borough to accommodate their needs.

Following local representation to IDB, they agreed to release a further small portion of land at their Millbrook site—the only IDB site currently available in the Larne Borough.

It is the strong opinion of both Larne Borough Council and Larne Development Forum that given Larne's ideal location as a leading port with excellent transport infrastructure and indeed the growth potential, the current availability of IDB land is inadequate to meet local needs.

The potential is available in Larne and we really are in need of more IDB land.
