Occasions on which the House has taken substantive business after 10.00 pm

1999/2000 (up to 23rd June)

Summary

1.  There have been 37 occasions on which substantive business has been taken after 10.00 pm.

2.  On 2 of those occasions, the Official Opposition has requested time for consideration of Statutory Instruments (one request jointly with the Liberal Democrats) (see analysis above).

3.  On 1 occasion, the House has considered House of Commons matters (see analysis above).

4.  On 34 of those occasions, substantive Government business was taken after 10.00 pm (see analysis below).

  • Orders taken after 10.00 pm - 5 occasions
  • Committee stages of constitutional Bills and the Finance Bill, remaining stages of Bills and Lords Amendments - 20 occasions (on 7 of which, business was delayed by Government statement)
  • Main business delayed by Statements - 8 occasions
  • Substantive business starting after 10.00 pm - 6 occasions
  • All stages of a Bill in one day - 1 occasion
  • Debate on the Membership of the House of Commons Commission (a Government Motion, not protected) - 1 occasion
  • 3rd Reading of the Sexual Offences Bill taken forthwith - 1 occasion
  • Government unwillingness to negotiate - 1 occasion
  • Government backbench rebellion on divisions as at 2nd Reading - 1 occasion
  • Guillotines and remaining stages of four Bills in one day - 1 occasion
  • Voting on Budget Resolutions - 1 occasion.
