Select Committee on Health Minutes of Evidence

Supplementary memorandum by Gallaher Group plc (TB 8C)

During the course of his evidence yesterday, Mr Wilson was asked by Audrey Wise MP for the evidence supporting his statement that between 11 and 12 million smokers in the UK had ceased smoking. The source of these figures is from "Alcohol consumption and smoking", Chapter 8 of the Health Survey of England 1996 (B Hedges and P Salvo). As set out in paragraph 4.73 of Gallaher's Submission, if you take the figures for 1996, of the persons living in the UK aged 16 and over who had at one time or another smoked cirgarettes regularly, 30 per cent of men and 21 per cent of women—which is equivalent to between 11 and 12 million people—had stopped smoking.

The other area upon which the Health Committee asked for further information from Gallaher related to the High Court application for judicial review of the SCOTH Report. I have asked the lawyers responsible for that litigation to provide the explanatory note requested.
