Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport Third Report

APPENDIX 22

Supplementary memorandum submitted by the New Millennium Experience Company

"BACK TO THE DOME" INQUIRY: TRAVEL TRADE

The Committee asked for further details of the company's activities to promote the Millennium Experience to the travel trade.

  2.  The two tables attached (1998 and 1999) set out the main travel trade shows, fairs and other related events at which the company has had, or will have, a presence either directly or, in one or two cases, through the London Tourist Board.

GENERAL UPDATE: FIRST QUARTER 1999

  3.  All top short-break producers are now launching their brochures for the year 2000. The Dome is featured in all of them through single and double-page spreads and print runs total some 15.2 million brochures.

  4.  The company attended a one-day "meet the press workshop" in Belgium, organised by the BTA and was accompanied by a London Tonight news crew. Coverage featured in London Tonight's news bulletins providing more than five minutes of TV coverage. The company also attended the main travel exhibition held in the Netherlands and met with key Dutch operators and European transport carriers.

  5.  As part of the ongoing programme of "familiarisation" trips to the Dome for all sectors of the travel trade, the company hosted a visit by Travel Weekly which subsequently featured a full colour double-page spread covering reasons to visit and how the trade will book.

  6.  This week the company is attending the ITB show in Berlin, the world's largest travel trade show. The Millennium Experience stand is within the BTA's area and is staffed full-time for the duration of the show by the company's General Manager, Travel Trade and her deputy.

In addition to the company's involvement in travel trade shows, fairs and other events, the "normal" business of discussions and negotiations with individual travel trade companies, travel trade groups, and transport providers continues with the aim of delivering a range of integrated travel/Dome packages at prices which offer value for money to those who wish to visit the Dome.
