British Beef (Bans)

Mr. Win Griffiths: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many states had banned British beef (a) before 1990 and (b) between 1990 and 1995; and how many have withdrawn their bans in the last year. [19755]

Mrs. Browning [holding answer 12 March 1997]: One country introduced a ban on British beef before 1990. Thirty-four countries banned imports of British beef between 1990 and 1995. Restrictions were lifted in 14 countries before Commission decision 96/239/EC introduced a worldwide ban on the export of British beef on 27 March 1996.

(d) Northern Ireland since 1996; and if he will make a statement on the reason for differential prices regionally for beef going into intervention storage. [18337]

Mr. Baldry [pursuant to his reply, 5 March 1997, column 683]: Differential regional prices for intervention purposes occur only in the areas of Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Northern Ireland is considered a separate region for intervention purchases in recognition of the particular importance of the beef sector there, and the effect of its proximity to the Republic of Ireland market.

A list of the prices awarded since March 1996 follows:

Private Finance Initiative

Mr. Timms: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will provide figures for his Department's PFI projects in the same form as used by the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department, in his answer to the hon. Member for Darlington (Mr. Milburn) of 6 March, Official Report, columns 692-93; and if he will list his latest estimates of annual totals for PFI projects, on the same basis as those given in table 5.5 of the Red Book. [20393]

Mr. Boswell: As I explained in my answer to the hon. Member for Darlington (Mr. Milburn) on 10 March 1997, Official Report, column 50, MAFF's entry for 1999-00 in table 5.5 of the Red Book is an outline estimate for non-PFI procurement only which will be subject to change when PFI tenders have been received.

A breakdown, by project, of the schemes identified in table 5.5 of the Red Book is given in table 1. Current estimates are shown in table 2.

Correspondence

Mr. Ainger: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for what reasons his Department has not replied to three letters from Mr. Comrie, the general secretary of the Association of Meat Inspectors, sent to him between June and December 1996. [20516]

Mrs. Browning: Mr. Comrie, general secretary of the Association of Meat Inspectors, wrote to me on 11 February 1997. This followed a meeting I held with the AMI on 16 January 1997 and the subsequent suggestions that the general secretary would write to me. I replied on 12 March 1997.

Aroparcin

Mr. Martyn Jones: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list by livestock species the dates on which the licence for avoparcin's use as a feed antibiotic has been (a) revoked and (b) reinstated; and if he will make a statement. [20645]

Mrs. Browning: All licences for the use of avoparcin in animal feeding stuffs for all species will be revoked by 1 April 1997. The question of reinstatement does not arise.

Fisheries Organisations (Meetings)

Mr. Salmond: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list the fishing organisations (a) he and (b) his officials have met since 1 July 1996. [20495]

Mr. Baldry: This information is not held centrally and definitive lists could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. MAFF Ministers and officials have had meetings or other contract with a large number of national, regional and local fishing organisations since 1 July 1996 on a wide variety of matters. These have included:
