Mr. Sproat: More channels will mean that there will be more opportunities for the coverage of sport on television, giving viewers more choice.
27. Mrs Clwyd: To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage how many representations she has received on the funding of the Welsh national opera house. [11785]
Mr. Sproat: The decision on this project was, of course, a matter for the Millennium Commission.
Mr. Hanson: To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what action she is taking to prevent a single broadcaster buying up exclusive rights to televise the Olympic games. [11762]
Mr. Sproat:
The Government have said that, with the exception of listed sporting events including the Olympic games which cannot be shown live on pay-per-view, sporting bodies should in general be free to sell their broadcasting rights in the interests of their sport. We are strongly aware of the public debate on this issue and are keeping it under close review.
