Mr. John Browne : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) how many infantry battalions or manpower equivalent are contained within the establishment of the Brigade of Gurkhas and the RAF Regiment ; (2) how many British infantry battalions equate, in terms of manpower, to the Brigade of Gurkhas and the RAF Regiment.
Mr. Archie Hamilton : There are five infantry battalions in the brigade of Gurkhas together with supporting units. United Kingdom infantry battalions vary in size according to role and differences in peace and war establishments. The RAF Regiment is not structured on the basis of battalions. It is not meaningful, therefore, to draw comparisons in this way.

(4) how many battalion year tasks will be relinquished as a result of his recent assessment of the new military threat now facing the United Kingdom ; and if he will list them ;
(5) what assessment he has made of whether the training of the officers and men of the Household Division, Light Division and the Parachute Regiment currently fit them to meet his criteria of universality in terms of geographic location and role, including armoured formations.
Mr. Archie Hamilton : My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State hopes to make a statement on the restructuring of the Army before the House rises for the summer recess. It would not be appropriate to comment on these matters until then.

Mr. John Browne : To ask the Secetary of State for Defence what is, in his reorganisation of the armed forces, his policy on retention by each of the three armed-forces of its own individual medical (including dental), communications, mechanical, catering and ordnance supporting arms.
Mr. Archie Hamilton : In looking for savings in support commensurate with those in the front line, we are examining the scope for rationalisation in all areas. The services will retain individual supporting arms where it is operationally necessary and cost-effective to do so.
Mr. Menzies Campbell : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what considerations influenced his decision to terminate the contract for the development of the type 2075 integrated sonar suite.
Mr. Kenneth Carlisle : I refer the hon. and learned Member to my answer of 17 June to the hon. Member for Houghton and Washington (Mr. Boyes) at column 67.

Mr. Menzies Campbell : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the integrated external and internal communications project definition studies.
Mr. Alan Clark : I will write to the hon. and learned Gentleman shortly.
