Child Abuse
Mr. Ronnie Campbell : To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many criminal convictions there have been for offences against children where children were abused by a parent in Blyth Valley and Northumberland in the last two years.
Mr. Kenneth Baker : Except in the case of homicides, no information is collected centrally on convictions of parents

for offences against their children. I understand that for Northumberland police force area there were two homicides of children in 1988 and one in 1989 which resulted in convictions of their parents for manslaughter.Probation Service
Mr. Simon Coombs : To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what was the average weekly cost per case in report work for magistrates courts by the probation services in England and Wales, including local and central costs in the last year for which records are available ;
(2) what was the total cost to the probation service in England and Wales, including both local and central costs, of report work for magistrates courts in the last year for which records are available ; and how many such cases were handled in that year by probation officers.
Mr. Kenneth Baker : No separate information is available on the cost of report work for magistrates courts. The estimated average cost per social inquiry report completed, which includes reports for magistrates courts, in 1988-89 was £210, which the average for other types of report was £860--"Probation Statistics, England and Wales 1989", table 12.3. In 1989, a total of 140,230 social inquiry reports were prepared for magistrates courts, 7,160 domestic inquiries about custody of and access to children, 1,990 conciliation cases and a number of other types of report-- tables 9.1, 9.2, 9.3 of "Probation Statistics". The cost estimate was based on information collected in 1977 and will be updated when the results of the 1990 national probation survey are available.

Mr. Kenneth Baker : The readily available information is the annual cost per domestic supervision case, which includes those cases resulting from matrimonial proceedings. In 1988-89 the average estimated cost per case was £610--"Probation Statistics, England and Wales, 1989" table 12.3. The estimate was based on information collected in 1977 and will be updated when the results of the 1990 national probation survey are available.

Mr. Kenneth Baker : No separate information is available centrally on the weekly or annual costs per case of report work for divorce courts. The costs are included in the estimated average cost per report for domestic reports, bail information means inquiries, inquiries for county courts and reports prepared on court appearance

for sentence after deferment. In the financial year 1988-89, the estimated cost per report completed was £860--table 12.3 of "Probation Statistics, England and Wales 1989". In 1989, the probation service dealt with 25,420 domestic inquiries concerning custody of and access to children--table 9.2. The cost estimate was based on information collected in 1977 and will be updated when the results of the 1990 national probation survey are available.
Durham Prison
Mr. Cummings : To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects slopping out to be discontinued in Her Majesty's prison Elvet, Durham ; and if he will make a statement.
Mrs. Angela Rumbold : Slopping out is now planned to end at HM prison Durham late in 1994.
Crime, Blyth Valley
Mr. Ronnie Campbell : To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what has been the percentage change in the number of crimes in the borough of Blyth Valley for 1990-91 ;
(2) how many car thefts were reported in the borough of Blyth Valley in the last three years.
Mr. Kenneth Baker : The information requested is not collated centrally for the borough of Blyth Valley.
Deportation
Mr. Cohen : To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis as to how many copies of form IM3A are distributed in each year by officers to persons stopped by them while on patrol and as to his policy on the issuing of each form to persons not guilty of any offence.
Mr. Peter Lloyd : I understand from the Commissioner that he is not aware of any instances of such forms being distributed to persons stopped by officers on patrol.
Form IM3--notice as regards liability to deportation--and form IM3A-- acknowledgement of receipt of form IM3--are normally served on persons who are not British citizens, at the police station and following charging with an imprisonable offence.
Mr. Darling : To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many nationals from middle east

countries issued with notices of intention to deport on national security grounds between November 1990 and January 1991 and who were removed from the United Kingdom following the making of a deportation order against them were so removed on or after 16 January.Burglaries, Leyton
Mr. Cohen : To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many burglaries there were in Leyton in each of the last three years ; and what percentage those were of all reported crimes in the area.
Mr. Kenneth Baker : The information available centrally is for Waltham Forest and is given in the table. Tables giving numbers of offences recorded by the police in each borough of the Metropolitan police district are placed in the Library quarterly.
