Mr. Janner : To ask the Attorney-General what steps he has taken to recruit members of ethnic minorities in top grades of employment in the Law Officers Department.

The Attorney-General : Recruitment at senior grades in the civil service is carried out by the Civil Service Commission. The Commission has taken various steps to aid recruitment of members of the ethnic minorities.

ER Mr. Janner : To ask the Attorney-General how many and what percentage of officers in each grade (1-7) and overall in the Law Officers Department are (a) women and (b) from ethnic minorities, respectively.

The Attorney-General : In the Departments for which I am responsible the number and percentage of officers in each grade from 1 to 7 and overall who are (a) women and (b) from ethnic minorities respectively as at 1 April 1990 (4 March 1991 in the case of the Crown prosecution service) are as follows :
